Search Engine Optimisation Is bad...
Unless you're sitting very still, in an igloo, holding your breath, going nowhere, and fasting, you are emitting carbon and plenty of it.
Computers tend to consume a fair amount of power and web services obviously use a fair amount of computers, from the small laptop I'm tapping away on now, to the farms of servers that actually host the sites swanc looks after.
It would be nice to run everything from little solar panels and little wind turbines, but at the moment, here in Sydney it is just not possible.
So swanc is proposing to pay other people to plant trees on its behalf to offset the emissions caused by its power consumption.
...But it doesn't have to be
Although I don't currently turn enough green to go fully green, it is high on the list as the company grows.
While I am not yet able to afford to fully carbon-offset all swanc activities, the fact that I do not use transport other than my feet to get to work and back each day will go some way towards redressing the balance.
It is the intention of swanc to be fully carbon neutral by the end of 2009. This will be done via commercial offset organisations, who will essentially be paid by swanc to plant tress on our behalf.
I will post details of our offset activities and plans here as they grow.
